Assignment 3

Choose one of the following:

A) Visit Shane's Blog and do a little research. Follow his links, google, anything you can think of. Make a post of your opinion on the story. Is Shane a victim or is he a fool?

B) Visit a news site's blog and comment on any news story of interest to you

Answer A) First of all, this guy is an idiot ! I think he took that picture knowing full well that if the guys from Loomis saw him do that, they would question him. His refusal to cooperate made him appear guilty of something, even if they didn't know what that was yet. This is exactly what Mr. Keen was refering to in Wikipedia. (See my assignment 2 blog)

Ifollowed this link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8z7NC5sgik, and listened to a law professor give 8 reasons why it is not in your best interest to talk to the police if you are detained for some reason.

assignment 2

a) describe what Web2.0 means to me.
b) look up Web 2.0 on a site such as wikipedia. describe any controversies.

Answer a) I took this class to better understand the Internet and computers. I'm not sure yet what Web 2.0 means to me. Honestly, I don't know enough about it to give an answer.

Answer b) It would seem the main criticism of Web 2.0 is that the intellectual value of information on the Internet is called into question. With so many social websites and people blogging about any subject, it is hard to separate facts from opinions. I think this will cause people not to trust real information. From Wikipedia:

"Critics such as Andrew Keen argue that Web 2.0 has created a cult of digital narcissism and amateurism, which undermines the notion of expertise by allowing anybody, anywhere to share (and place undue value upon) their own opinions about any subject and post any kind of content regardless of their particular talents, knowledgeability, credentials, biases or possible hidden agendas. He states that the core assumption of Web 2.0, that all opinions and user-generated content are equally valuable and relevant is misguided, and is instead "creating an endless digital forest of mediocrity: uninformed political commentary, unseemly home videos, embarrassingly amateurish music, unreadable poems, essays and novels," also stating that Wikipedia is full of "mistakes, half truths and misunderstandings"."
